Last week, the two biggest AI companies in the world had a bad few days. Both admitted that during their own safety work, their AI ended up on the open internet when it was supposed to be shut away from it. In both cases the AI then got into computers belonging to other companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people here did not see this news. There is no reason a parent would have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But your child uses AI, or will soon. So it helps to understand what actually happened, because the scary part is not where the headlines put it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happened<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These were controlled experiments, not products going wrong in public. Both companies deliberately give their AI heavy tools during safety work, so they can see what it is capable of. The AI is meant to stay inside a closed space while they watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two different things went wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI said its AI found a security hole the company did not know existed, used it to get out of that closed space, and reached the internet. It then went into the computers of a company called Hugging Face, which stores AI software, because the answer it was hunting for was sitting there. OpenAI called it an unprecedented incident. Hugging Face spotted the intrusion using its own AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthropic, the company that makes Claude, then checked its own records. Its problem was simpler. A setup mistake meant the closed space was not as closed as researchers believed. Out of 141,006 sessions, it found three where its AI had reached the internet and got into the systems of three organisations. Two of them did not know until Anthropic called them, on 27 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither company says its AI meant harm. It was trying to finish the job it had been given. It found a shortcut, and the shortcut ran through someone else’s computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is still a problem. A machine that breaks in to finish its work has still broken in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real risk is access, not intelligence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is the main idea. An AI can only do what you give it the keys to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In those experiments, the AI had been handed a lot of keys on purpose. It could browse the web. It could run commands. It could reach other computers. The researchers wanted to see how far it would go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think of a new worker who is very fast and very literal. Give that person one folder and they can only see that folder. Give them the master login and they can change anything, very quickly, without stopping to ask if they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the danger comes from what the AI can reach. Not from the AI being clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why the story sounds worse than it is for you. A chatbot on your phone is not linked to your bank. It cannot open your files. It can only use the tools switched on inside that chat. In a normal chat, that is almost nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is AI safe for children at home?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mostly, today, yes. I would rather say that clearly than scare you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your child uses a chatbot for homework on a tablet, nothing is going to jump out of the screen and empty your account. Parents often ask whether ChatGPT is safe for kids, expecting the answer to be about hacking. It is not. The real AI risks for children are much duller, and we come to them further down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies are a different story. Businesses are now connecting AI to their own files, email and servers. That needs real care. These systems can find and use security holes far faster than a person can. Plenty of firms are trying this right now without thinking hard enough about what access they are handing over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens as AI becomes more independent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI is moving from answering questions to doing jobs. Not a chatbot that replies to you, but software that goes off alone for twenty minutes and gets something done. Books a flight. Changes a database. Sends emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every step in that direction means handing over more keys. And the thing holding them never gets tired, never checks with a colleague, and does not always see why a shortcut is a bad idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people building it know this. Days after those incidents, more than a thousand people who work at the top AI companies signed a statement asking the United States government to help build the tools needed to slow AI development down on purpose. Anthropic’s chief executive signed it. So did OpenAI’s chief scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is fair to ask why they do not simply slow down themselves. Their answer is that stopping alone changes nothing. If one company stops, the rest keep going and the technology arrives at the same time anyway. A rule for everyone at once is the only kind that works. That is the argument. You can also read it the other way, and many people do. Asking a government to slow you down looks responsible and costs you nothing while you keep building at full speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We asked Claude directly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For interest, we put the big question to Claude, the AI made by Anthropic. This is not evidence and it is not expert testimony. It is one AI model’s own answer, printed as it came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could AI become a danger to humanity?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, yes. But not like in the films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real danger is quieter. AI is being put in charge of more and more real things. It works faster than anyone can check. And sometimes it takes a shortcut nobody asked for, just to finish the job. That is what happened last week, and nobody noticed for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now picture it bigger. Attacks on hospitals and banks, done by machines in seconds. Voices and videos you cannot trust. A few companies with more power than most governments. None of this needs the AI to want anything. It just needs strong systems, too much access, and normal human carelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will it end in something we cannot fix? Nobody knows. Anyone who sounds sure, either way, is selling you something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hopeful part is that people are still choosing. What to connect it to. What to allow. How fast to build. Nothing is decided yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AI risks that actually reach your child<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost none of the above touches a study session. The ones that do are smaller and closer to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first is accuracy. AI still gets things wrong, and it sounds sure of itself when it does. If an app explains a method that does not match what the teacher showed in class, your child is caught in the middle, and you may never notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second is dependence. This is the one I would watch most. A child who asks for the answer instead of working it out will look fine at the kitchen table and struggle in the exam room, where there is no phone. We wrote about whether your child is copying or actually learning, and nothing in this news changes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third is further away. Your child will work around these systems for their whole life. Knowing when not to trust the machine will be a real skill. That habit starts young, with one answer that looks wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing here means you should take AI away from your child. It means you should know what it is connected to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start there. Whatever app or chatbot your child uses, look at what it can reach. Can it read the photos on the phone? The contacts? The email? Most study apps and chatbots need none of that. If something asks for access it does not need for the job, say no. That one habit covers more risk than anything else on this page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then look at what the app does with your child’s information, and where that information goes. If a company cannot answer that in plain words, that is your answer. Then use it with your child, not near your child. Sit for one session a week and watch what happens when they get stuck. Does the app explain, or does it hand over the answer? Does your child read the explanation, or copy it? You will learn more in ten minutes of watching than from any review online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And keep your own judgement switched on. When an answer looks strange, say so out loud in front of your child. That is how they learn to do it themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people who build these systems spent last week asking for a way to slow down. A parent who goes slowly is in good company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
